Write a business letter (see sample) to a business, a person, a group, a team, an organization- anyone who you think might donate an item to our Accelerated Reader Auction.
It should be a three paragraph letter.
In the first paragraph, introduce yourself. Briefly describe A.R. in paragraph two. In paragraph three, explain the auction and ask for a donation. Bring this letter to class with a stamped envelope addressed to your recipient. Do NOT seal it.
After I proof and grade your letter, it will be mailed.

Dear Ms. Collins:
I am a fourth grade student at Forest Trail Elementary. I love to read, and your books are some of my favorite things to read. I’ve been reading everything you write for three years now. The Hunger Games series is amazing! I was sad to hear that Mockingjay was the last book in the series.
My language arts class uses a program called Accelerated Reader that awards points based on the length and difficulty of the books we read. We take computer tests which ask us detailed questions about the books.
At the end of the school year, we are going to have an auction during which students can purchase donated items with earned reading points. I would really appreciate it if you could donate an autographed copy of your latest thriller to our auction. If that’s not possible, perhaps you have something else in mind that you could send. Even if it’s not possible to donate any item, I’d still like you to know that your writing has given me hours of enjoyment and inspiration.
